Scholar's Trail

Guildford Cathedral in the distance

This is a Speckled Wood butterfly, Pararge aegeria
Out on a stroll on Sunday we walked along part of what is called the Scholar's Trail. The walk was very pleasant, not too hot and partly under the shady trees of the Chantries. At one high point we had a view across to Guildford Cathedral, before descending into farmland, then up on to the Downs again, where we found some butterflies on the ripening brambles.
If I find out more about the Scholar's Trail, I'll add it here.

Apparently the countryside department of Guildford Borough Council set up the trail, putting the discs on posts. but they haven't any funds to make maps/route information etc. about it. But what it is, is still not forthcoming - i.e. where it starts and where it goes to. Could be a genuine mystery tour!
