Louisiana Trip

Today, D took the day off and we three went to Jazz Fest. We had looked at the programme and had a couple of bands earmarked. We arrived on the Shell bus armed with chairs, water, hats and sunscreen; made our acquaintance with the Shell 'tent' and then went off in search of Jazz. Bands were playing all over the Fairgrounds in the many tents and stages. We wanted to sample some of the Cajun Zydeco music and found Cedric Watson playing at the Fais Do-Do stage. This was great music and we stayed a while. We had a bit of time to wander along the craft areas before our next band was on, so we watched some of the Haitian crafters, busy at work. There are masses of crafted items of all varieties for sale at Jazz Fest. There were various things on sticks for lunch, which we ate, seated and watching a band all dressed up like a carnival parade. There were also real parades going by every so often with some fantastic costumes. The folk must have been very hot.

We dropped into various tents for music, stopping for a while to listen to the great Charlie Musselwhite with his group, then tried some coffee and beignets to keep us going! And to end with we listened to a really fab band, Stefon Harris and Blackout, with Stefon Harris various xylophone type keyboards. Then it was time to leave and to meet S where the bus dropped us back downtown.
